Special Emergency Response Team (S.E.R.T.)

The SERT program is designed in part to meet the State Model Court Security Plan requiring the Sheriff to have response capability to high-risk incidents that may unfold in the courts. Realizing that there was not a sizable tactical response capability within county law enforcement. SERT will provide our office, as well as local, state and federal law enforcement agencies with a tool for handling high-risk incidents involving hostages, barricaded subjects, warrant service and other incidents requiring specialized support.

The Special Emergency Response Team (S.E.R.T.) is under the command of Capt. Thomas Willis (pictured below).

SERT is currently composed of two units, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT). All SERT members come from within the ranks of the Hudson County Sheriff's Office and perform SERT functions, in addition to their day-to-day assignments within the Sheriff's Office.

SERT can provide trained personnel for the following situations:

  • Hostage situations
  • Barricaded subjects
  • High-risk warrant service
  • Dignitary protection
  • Specialized support in civil disorder environments
